These feathery and/or colorful branches are essential for bouquets, corsages and other flower arrangements. They usually come in shades of lavender and purple, but breeders have also developed varieties in other hues, including white, pink, and yellow. What we may call the flowers of limonium species are really colorful, papery calyxes which surround the true flowers. The calyxes keep their vibrant color, making The genus has a subcosmopolitan distribution in Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia and North America. By far the greatest diversity (over 100 species) is in the area stretching from the Canary Islands east through the Mediterranean region to central Asia; for comparison, North America only has three native Limonium species.
